METROPOLIS

The Catacombs (the City of Graves)

Deep under the bustling city above, lies the burial grounds for the original city that had it's foundations on this shore, it is believed that this buried city is around 2000 years old, and very few know of its existence, including Joh Fredersen.

It is within the bowels of these catacombs that workers go to listen to Maria, a daughter of a worker, who preaches to them, trying to keep their broken spirits up.

Though much of the catacombs are in ruins, there are areas that are still passable. The two most well known are what is now know as "Sanctuary" which looks like as though it was once used as a secret meeting place for early Christians sometime back in 1st or 2nd centuries, it is now used by the workers, out of sight of the prying eyes of the masters on the surface. The other area consists of the communal burial ground, where the bones of the original inhabitants still rest.

Because most of the catacombs are unexplored, it is also a safe haven for escaped workers and hiding place for the criminal element of Metropolis.

Shown to the right is the map used by the workers to find their way from the Machine Rooms to Sanctuary, without them one could become lost (click on map for larger view)
