METROPOLIS

The Machine Rooms

Dividing the Worker city below from the Capitalist city above are the Machine Rooms, These massive hydro-electric generators supply power in abundance to the masses that live in either city.

the heat and steam generated by the machines keeps most of the machine complex at an uncomfortably humid 85 degrees. The smell of oil, grease and human perspiration permeates the air, while the whirring of gears and the churning of the massive crankshafts is deafening.

The workers from the city below labor during 10 hour shifts to maintain these behemoths which they named after ancient gods like Moloch and Ganesha.

It is estimated that there are between 50,000 and 75,000 men working the controls of the machines at any one time.

Because manual labor was cheap, and the automated controls for such an endeavor had not been properly developed by the time of construction, most of the monitoring of the water's temperature, pressure, and flow are all done with human eyes and hands.

The Machines are powered by dynamos that convert the natural flow of water from the underground river into useable electricity. After it passes through the turbines, some of the water then flows into the waterworks which is used by the population for human consumption. The rest is directed into water jackets and is used as a natural coolant for some of the harder working machines. After the machines are done with the liquid, it is sent back into its original path to continue on.
