How about our fearless band runs into a nomad pack called "Sons of Kazinsky"(or however you spell it). They are follwers of Ted Kazinsky. They are anti-technology, and when they heard about this show(thru their loose affiliation with the inquistors), they decide to set an example of the merry band of travellers. First thing they would do is destroy or hinder communications for the travellers. They could then start picking stragglers off. After a day they would do night raids against the camp. Of course this would be happening in a totally barren area, like a desert.
